The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
The Bill was transmitted on 16th September, 2026 by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, following a directive from the leadership of the National Assembly.
The transmission is in accordance with Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires that any Bill to alter the Constitution must be approved by not less than two-thirds of all members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and by not less than two-thirds (24) of the State Houses of Assembly.
The National Assembly had earlier passed the Bill after public hearings across the six geo-political zones.
The Clerk said details of the amendments will be communicated later. The State Assemblies will now debate and vote on the Bill. If at least 24 states approve it, it will go to the President for assent.
