Brighton Thrash Arsenal 3-0 To End Gunners’ Perfect Start

Arsenal’s flawless start to the Premier League season came to a crashing halt on Saturday after Brighton & Hove Albion produced a commanding 3-0 victory at the American Express Stadium, ending the Gunners’ unbeaten run and handing Manchester City the top spot in the league.

The Seagulls, celebrating the club’s 125th anniversary in front of their home fans in Falmer, delivered a superb performance to outclass Mikel Arteta’s side, who had won all four of their previous league matches while conceding just once.

Brighton took the lead in the 31st minute through Pascal Gross, whose low strike bounced in off the post for his fourth goal in five matches.

The hosts doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Charalampos Kostoulas fired home a stunning 25-yard effort following a swift counter-attack, less than a minute after Bukayo Saka squandered a golden opportunity to level the score for Arsenal.

Chema Andres sealed the impressive victory in the 57th minute, rising highest to head home from close range after connecting with a well-delivered corner from Gross.

The heavy defeat was Arsenal’s biggest loss since they were beaten 3-0 by Brighton in May 2023 and marked their first setback of the new campaign.

The result also reshaped the Premier League standings. Manchester City moved to the summit with 12 points from four matches, while Arsenal slipped to second after playing five games. Brighton climbed to third place with 10 points.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side have now scored an impressive 16 goals in their opening five league matches, the highest tally in the division, underlining their exciting start to the season.

Wearing a special pale blue shirt to commemorate the club’s 125th anniversary, Brighton crowned the celebrations with one of their finest performances, overwhelming one of the league’s early title favourites.

From the opening whistle, the hosts pressed aggressively, disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm and forced the visitors into costly mistakes in dangerous areas. The Gunners struggled to win key battles across the pitch and rarely found the control that had defined their opening four victories.

After the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted his side were second best and deserved to lose.

“They deserved to win the game, they were the better team, especially in the early stages of the first half. We were not competing on the level that is required. We did technical errors in the wrong areas and lost our duels,” Arteta said.

Despite the disappointing result, the Spanish manager urged his players to learn from the defeat and move forward.

“But I have to put into perspective what the team has done since the World Cup. It has been exceptional. We will learn from this experience and go again.”
