Commandant Abdulhamid Salisu Kabara has officially taken over as the new State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command, with a pledge to uphold professionalism, protect human rights and strengthen law enforcement across the state.
Kabara assumed office following his redeployment to the command, replacing Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye.
His appointment comes at a difficult period for the command, which is facing public scrutiny over the death of 37 persons arrested in connection with alleged illegal mining activities in Niger State.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abubakar Rabiu Muti.
In his first official remarks, the new commandant expressed sadness over the deaths and sympathised with the bereaved families.
He said the tragedy had deeply affected the command and offered prayers for the victims and their loved ones.
Kabara reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to combating illegal mining and other criminal activities but stressed that every operation must be carried out with respect for human dignity.
He said the Corps would continue to perform its statutory duties of arrest, investigation and law enforcement in line with the law.
The commandant noted that officers must always balance effective enforcement with the responsibility to protect the lives, safety and welfare of persons in custody.
He also prayed for Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, grant them eternal rest and comfort their families during the difficult period.
The statement said the new commandant is committed to providing effective leadership while ensuring that the command operates professionally and in accordance with the principles of justice and respect for human rights.
