Speaking at the launch, the Publisher and Chairman of The Eagle Times Nigeria, Sir Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, said the new publication was established not merely as another newspaper but as a media organisation with a clear responsibility to serve the public interest.

He described the newspaper’s guiding philosophy as “The Voice For The People, The Watchdog For The Nation,” saying the slogan represents the organisation’s commitment to listening to Nigerians, telling their stories and demanding accountability from those entrusted with public responsibilities.

“Those words carry a responsibility. To be a voice for the people means that we must listen to Nigerians, tell their stories, highlight their concerns and give visibility to issues that affect their daily lives,” Chukwunyere said.

He added that being a watchdog for the nation requires journalists to ask questions, demand accountability and scrutinise those in positions of authority regardless of political affiliation, social status or influence.

The publisher assured readers and the wider public that The Eagle Times would be guided by accuracy, fairness, professionalism, credibility and responsible journalism.

“We will not publish simply because a story is sensational. We will verify. We will investigate. We will seek the other side. We will correct our mistakes when we make them,” he said.

Chukwunyere stressed that the newspaper’s loyalty would not be to any political party, government or individual, but to journalism, truth and the Nigerian public.

According to him, The Eagle Times is coming into the media industry at a period of rapid transformation, where audiences now consume information through newspapers, websites, television, podcasts and social media platforms.

He explained that the organisation was not being established as a newspaper alone but as a multimedia media platform that would combine traditional journalism with modern technology.

“Our newspaper will work alongside our digital platforms and The Eagle Times TV, allowing us to reach Nigerians wherever they are,” he said.

The publisher also disclosed that the organisation would create opportunities for young journalists, writers, photographers, producers, digital creators and other media professionals to develop their talents and contribute to national development.

He said The Eagle Times would cover key areas including politics, governance, business, economy, security, judiciary, education, health, technology, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and international affairs.

Beyond reporting events, he said the newspaper would focus on telling meaningful stories, investigating issues requiring public attention, highlighting neglected communities and celebrating Nigerians making positive contributions to society.

“Today, we spread our wings. Today, The Eagle Times takes flight,” Chukwunyere declared.

Eagle Times Must Rise Above Noise, Speak Truth To Power — Abitogun

Delivering the keynote address at the launch, the Lead Consultant/CEO of Management Edge Limited, Dr. Ayodeji Rex Abitogun, challenged the new newspaper to embrace the values represented by the eagle — vision, courage, strength and the ability to see beyond the ordinary.

In a speech titled: “Soaring Above The Noise: The Eagle, The Press And The Courage To Speak Truth To Power,” Abitogun said the choice of October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day, for the launch carried a symbolic meaning.

He said the eagle represents the responsibility of journalists to look beyond surface events and investigate the deeper issues affecting society.

“Journalism must go beyond reporting what happened. It must investigate why it happened, who is affected, who is responsible, and what it means for society,” he said.

Abitogun urged The Eagle Times to practise what he described as “eagle-eyed journalism” by providing context, asking difficult questions and ensuring that facts guide its reporting.

He warned that the modern media environment faces growing challenges, including misinformation, disinformation, manipulated images and videos, as well as artificial intelligence-generated content.

According to him, credibility remains the greatest asset of journalism in an era where everyone can publish information instantly.

“In this environment, journalism cannot compete merely on speed; it must compete on trust,” he said.

The keynote speaker also highlighted the important role of the press in strengthening democracy, noting that journalism provides citizens with information needed to participate meaningfully in public affairs.

He said journalists must maintain independence while remaining responsible, adding that speaking truth to power does not mean opposing everything government does.

“When government succeeds, report it. When they fail, report it. When allegations are made, investigate them. When allegations prove false, say so,” he said.

Abitogun further urged the newspaper to maintain editorial integrity by avoiding sensationalism, misinformation and undue influence from political, commercial or social interests.

He challenged the management and editorial team of The Eagle Times to be “independent without being irresponsible; courageous without being reckless; critical without becoming cynical; and fast, but never faster than the truth.”
