The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded another major breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking, seizing more than 3.9 tonnes of illicit drugs and recovering firearms during coordinated operations across several states.

The agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

Babafemi said one of the biggest interceptions was made at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where officers uncovered 354,000 tablets of Tapentadol weighing 307.2 kilograms in a shipment that arrived from Pakistan.

He said another cargo from the United Kingdom was also intercepted at the airport, leading to the recovery of 70 parcels of Colorado weighing 75.9 kilograms hidden inside six travel bags.

According to him, four suspects were arrested in connection with the shipment, while investigations revealed that the consignments were allegedly sent by two Nigeria-based associates living in the United Kingdom.

The spokesman said NDLEA operatives also arrested suspected traffickers and recovered huge quantities of cannabis, methamphetamine and other dangerous drugs during separate raids in Cross River, Edo, Ondo, Kaduna, Taraba, Kano and Lagos states.

He said officers in Plateau State recovered two pump-action rifles, a locally made gun, live cartridges and ammunition during a raid on a suspect’s residence, where methamphetamine was also found.

Babafemi noted that the nationwide operations were driven by intelligence gathered by the agency, resulting in the arrest of several suspects linked to drug trafficking.

He added that the agency also sustained its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign with sensitisation programmes in schools and communities across Oyo, Ebonyi, Niger, Kano, Lagos and Ogun states.

The NDLEA spokesman said the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), praised the officers involved in the operations for their professionalism and urged them to remain committed to the fight against drug trafficking.

The latest operations underscore the agency’s determination to dismantle drug networks, disrupt illegal supply chains and improve public safety as Nigeria continues to battle the growing threat of illicit drugs and related crimes.
