The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 3,829 senior police officers in what has been described as one of the biggest promotion exercises in the Nigeria Police Force in recent years.

Those elevated include two Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs), 10 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), 17 Commissioners of Police (CPs), and 3,800 officers of other ranks.

The approval was given at the 5th Plenary Meeting of the Commission held on Wednesday, October 29, 2026, at the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, presided over by the Chairman of the PSC, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashimu Argungu.

A statement issued by the Commission said the promotions were based on merit, seniority, examination performance, availability of vacancies and clean disciplinary records.

According to the Commission, the two DIGs promoted are expected to fill existing vacancies in the management team of the Force and will be deployed to head key departments at the Force Headquarters.

Similarly, the 10 newly promoted AIGs will be posted to head various Zonal Commands across the country, while the 17 CPs will take charge of State Commands and strategic formations.

Sources at the Commission disclosed that the exercise also affected over 3,800 officers from the rank of Superintendent of Police down to Inspectors, who have been awaiting promotion for over two years.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has welcomed the promotions, describing it as a morale booster that would re-energize the Force for better service delivery.

He charged the promoted officers to see their elevation as a call to higher responsibility and renewed commitment to the security of lives and property in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The PSC Chairman, DIG Argungu (rtd), warned that the Commission would not tolerate indolence and corruption, stressing that future promotions will be strictly tied to professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.

He assured that the Commission has cleared all backlogs of promotion and will now ensure regular and timely promotion of qualified officers to reduce stagnation in the Force.

The list of promoted officers has been forwarded to the IGP for implementation and formal decoration, which is expected to commence next week at the Force Headquarters.
