NDC presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has assured Nigerians that tackling insecurity, corruption and poverty would be the top priorities of his administration if elected in the 2027 general election.

Obi gave the assurance on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, as part of his ongoing nationwide grassroots sensitisation tour.

The former governor said the visit to Ebonyi followed a similar engagement in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, where he also met with residents to discuss issues affecting the country.

Before the meeting, Obi stopped at Nkalagu and Ezillo to greet supporters. He later visited the Ezillo market, where he interacted with women traders and farmers before joining party supporters on a road walk to the venue in Abakaliki.

He said many participants at the town hall expressed concern over rising insecurity, especially kidnapping and banditry, corruption, increasing government borrowing and the poor state of hospitals, schools and other public facilities.

According to him, one of the most touching moments was the contribution from a representative of persons living with disabilities, who spoke about the challenges they face and the need for greater government support.

Responding to the concerns, Obi said: “I assured the participants that, upon election, our foremost priorities will be to unite the country, decisively tackle insecurity and confront corruption, while pulling our people out of poverty.”

Speaking on the welfare of persons living with disabilities, he added: “To our brothers and sisters living with disabilities, I reiterated that the compassion of a nation is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. We will work with state governments to ensure their inclusion, proper care and dignity.”

The former Anambra governor also pledged to improve access to quality healthcare and education across the country.

He said: “We will also invest massively in education and healthcare, including at least one fully functional primary healthcare centre in every political ward across Nigeria, while working to reduce the cost of living and expand opportunities for all.”

Obi thanked residents of Ebonyi State, party members and organisers for what he described as the warm reception and active participation during the meeting.

The town hall meeting forms part of his nationwide consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, during which he has continued to engage Nigerians on his vision for governance and national development.

He ended the event with his familiar message of hope, saying: “A New Nigeria is POssible, and Nigeria will be OK!”
