A new opinion poll conducted by the Civil Society Situation Room Opinion Polls has projected the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Barr. Ikenna Emeruem, as the leading contender in the forthcoming Okigwe South Federal Constituency House of Representatives election.
The poll, released by the head of the Okigwe South Polls, Dr. Uchechukwu Ozoji, indicated that Emeruem is gaining increasing support from voters across the constituency, with his grassroots appeal and political profile placing him ahead of his major rivals.
According to the poll, the political landscape in Okigwe South appears to be shifting in favour of the PDP candidate as support for other leading contenders seems to be slowing.
Emeruem is contesting against Mr. Jonas Okeke of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Engr. Queen Oluchi Duruibe of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The survey noted that although the APC candidate was initially seen as a strong challenger, campaign activities linked to his ambition have reduced in recent weeks, while Emeruem’s visibility across communities has continued to grow.
The Civil Society Situation Room said the opinion poll covered voters from different social, economic and geographical backgrounds across the constituency.
The exercise reportedly included residents of urban communities, rural settlements and hinterland areas, with participants drawn from various groups, including traders, farmers, artisans, civil servants, youths and women.
The organisers said the broad coverage was aimed at providing a balanced picture of public opinion rather than relying only on politically active supporters or campaign gatherings.
Findings from the survey also suggest that many respondents view Emeruem as a candidate capable of providing effective representation and maintaining closer engagement with constituents if elected.
However, political observers believe the race remains open, noting that campaign mobilisation, party structures, voter turnout and last-minute political developments could still influence the outcome of the election.
The poll has nevertheless added fresh momentum to the contest by placing the PDP candidate among the frontrunners in the race for the Okigwe South Federal Constituency seat.
As campaigns continue across the constituency, political stakeholders are expected to intensify efforts to win over undecided voters ahead of the election.
