Matheus Cunha inspires dramatic turnaround as Carrick’s side recover from two-goal deficit at Old Trafford
Manchester United ended a difficult run of form with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in their Champions League clash at Old Trafford.
United looked set for another disappointing night after Roma scored twice in the first half to take control of the match.
Matias Soule opened the scoring for the Italian side before Donyell Malen doubled their advantage from the penalty spot.
The result appeared to increase the pressure on Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick as his team struggled to find their rhythm.
The home supporters expressed their frustration at half-time after watching United deliver a poor first-half performance.
However, United returned with renewed energy after the break and began to put Roma under serious pressure.
Matheus Cunha changed the direction of the match after winning a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes converted after a retake.
The goal lifted the atmosphere at Old Trafford as United pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Cunha then levelled the game after a costly mistake from Leonardo Balerdi allowed him to finish calmly and bring United back into the contest.
The Brazilian completed the comeback with a brilliant near-post strike from Shea Lacey’s pass to send the home fans into celebration.
Although Cunha was later shown a red card for a needless foul, United held on during a tense final period.
The victory ended United’s 54-day wait for a win and provided a major boost for Carrick and his players.
Carrick praised his team’s fighting spirit, saying the players deserved credit for responding strongly in a difficult situation.
Captain Bruno Fernandes also said the victory could become the beginning of a positive change after a challenging period for the club.
The win gave Manchester United renewed hope while proving they still have the character to fight back when facing adversity.
