Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, produced a stunning performance on Wednesday night to defeat Brazil 3-1 and qualify for a historic FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final against Japan.

The victory at the Mohammed V Stadium in Morocco marks the first time the Flamingos have reached the final of the global tournament, moving within one win of becoming world champions.

After a goalless first half in which Nigeria controlled possession and created the better chances, the Flamingos returned from the break with greater intensity and were rewarded for their dominance.

Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, calmly finishing to hand Nigeria a deserved lead.

The Flamingos doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru found the back of the net, putting Brazil under increasing pressure.

Bashiru struck again in the 80th minute to complete her brace and effectively seal victory for Nigeria with an outstanding attacking display.

Brazil managed a late consolation goal through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late as the Flamingos comfortably held on to book their place in the final.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the Nigerian players and coaching crew after a disciplined and clinical performance against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Nigeria will now face Japan in Saturday’s final, with the Flamingos aiming to complete their remarkable campaign by winning the country’s first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

The historic victory also underlines the steady rise of Nigeria’s women’s youth football programme and offers the Flamingos an opportunity to etch their names into the nation’s football history with victory in the final.
