The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the recent United States midterm elections and use their votes to demand political change in the 2027 general elections.
The party said the outcome of the American polls showed that citizens have the power to hold governments accountable when leaders fail to address their concerns.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said Nigerians must reject the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if they want to end what it described as years of economic hardship, insecurity and declining opportunities.
The party said the U.S. election demonstrated that no political party or leader should consider power as a permanent entitlement.
“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability,” the ADC said.
The opposition party argued that elections should be based on citizens’ welfare rather than political loyalty, sentiments or personality cults.
According to the ADC, Nigerians cannot continue to complain about rising living costs, insecurity and hardship while supporting the same political system it blamed for the challenges facing the country.
“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure. We cannot earnestly yearn for change while sustaining the very political system responsible for our collective impoverishment,” the party said.
The ADC said the 2027 election provides Nigerians with an opportunity to use their voter cards as tools for change rather than symbols of citizenship.
The party also presented itself as an alternative to the APC, promising to make Nigeria more affordable, secure and create more employment opportunities for citizens.
“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same. In 2027, let our votes speak louder than the APC-induced suffering,” the ADC added.
