The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns over what it described as growing restrictions against opposition activities, alleging that some hotels in Abuja have started denying the party access to their facilities after accepting bookings.

The opposition party claimed the development was part of a wider attempt to limit its political activities and weaken democratic competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., on Thursday, the NDC alleged that Rockview Hotel and BON Hotel in Abuja cancelled arrangements for its meetings despite earlier agreements.

The party said Rockview Hotel cancelled the use of its facility for the NDC’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 2026, adding that a similar situation occurred recently when another meeting was planned.

According to the party, the hotel cited “orders from above” as the reason for refusing the booking.

The NDC also alleged that BON Hotel, Wuse, Abuja, rejected its request to use its facility despite the party fulfilling the conditions required for the arrangement.

The party further claimed that its National Campaign Council unveiling was almost disrupted after the venue provider allegedly requested a refund of payment already made.

The statement said the party resisted the decision and eventually held the event at the paid venue.

The NDC said such actions were unacceptable in a democratic society, urging political actors and stakeholders to protect the right of all parties to organise and campaign freely.

The statement read, “This is not democracy. The APC should allow all parties to campaign without let or hindrance, and give Nigerians the opportunity to make their choice on who governs them.”

The party also called on Nigerians and democracy advocates to speak against what it described as anti-democratic practices by the affected hotels.

It stated, “We implore all well meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy to call out Rockview and BON Hotel for their anti-people and anti-democratic actions.”

The NDC maintained that it remains committed to providing Nigerians with an alternative political platform, saying, “Nigerians deserve better, and NDC is prepared to serve with passion and patriotism.”

The party’s allegations come amid increasing political activities by opposition groups ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties intensify mobilisation efforts across the country.

The APC, Rockview Hotel and BON Hotel had not issued any public response to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
