The Federal Government has announced plans to engage 4,000 social media influencers to promote President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure projects and communicate the achievements of the administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed the plan on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving a report from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) following the students’ independent inspection of ongoing federal road projects in Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna and Sokoto states.
Umahi said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that Nigerians, especially young people who rely heavily on digital platforms for information, receive firsthand updates on government projects and reforms.
According to him, the administration must become more proactive in communicating its achievements.
“We have to fight this social media war. So, we have to launch 4,000 social media influencers to tell our stories.”
The minister said he was proud of the progress recorded under President Tinubu’s administration, particularly in infrastructure development, and stressed the need for the government to tell its own story.
“You know I am proud of what the President is doing in infrastructure. I’m proud of all the gains we have made in various sectors of the economy, so we have to tell our stories. If you don’t say ‘I am’, nobody will tell you who you are.”
Umahi also praised the National Association of Nigerian Students for independently assessing federal road projects instead of relying solely on reports circulating online.
He said the government would consider requests by the students for the construction of pedestrian bridges around university campuses and other road safety measures to protect students and other road users.
Speaking on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the minister disclosed that the 105-kilometre pavement currently under construction is expected to be completed by November, describing the project as one of the administration’s flagship infrastructure initiatives.
He, however, expressed concern over repeated acts of vandalism along the highway, including the destruction of public infrastructure and the theft of installed safety facilities.
Umahi appealed to Nigerians to protect public assets, noting that government projects are funded with taxpayers’ money and are meant to benefit all citizens.
He also encouraged Nigerians to continue monitoring ongoing projects in their communities, saying independent verification helps promote transparency and allows citizens to assess government performance based on facts rather than social media narratives.
The planned
influencer campaign comes as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the Federal Government placing greater emphasis on communicating its policies, infrastructure projects and economic reforms through digital platforms that reach millions of Nigerians.
