Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), declaring that the country’s participation at the global gathering will be driven by national interest, commitment to multilateralism and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign for reforms of global institutions.
Shettima is representing President Tinubu at the annual summit, where world leaders are expected to deliberate on issues affecting global peace, security, economic growth, climate change and sustainable development.
The Vice President said Nigeria would use the platform to advocate for a fairer international system that gives developing countries, especially those in Africa, greater representation and opportunities.
“Our message in New York is clear. Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable, and responsive to the realities of today,” Senator Shettima said.
“We will engage our partners firmly from the standpoint of Nigeria’s national interest while advancing President Tinubu’s call for a global system that gives developing countries a stronger voice and a fairer opportunity to prosper.”
Shettima arrived in New York alongside Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, and other senior government officials.
He was received on arrival by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Chief Dele Alake; Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim; and other senior government and diplomatic officials.
During the General Debate, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, presenting the country’s position on key international issues, including peace and security, economic development, global cooperation and sustainable growth.
He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, international organisations and development partners on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
Nigeria will use the engagements to reinforce its position on reforms of the international financial architecture, improved access to climate finance and technology, sustainable development, and stronger representation for Africa in global decision-making.
The annual United Nations General Assembly brings together heads of state, government officials and global leaders to discuss pressing international challenges and strengthen cooperation among member states.
