The Ghana Police Service has uncovered an alleged robbery syndicate accused of trailing bank customers after cash withdrawals and stealing their money in Kumasi.
Three Nigerian nationals, Aboy Promise, Favour Uwalaka and Kingsley, have been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command over their alleged involvement in the crimes.
The police said the suspects operated by monitoring banking locations, identifying customers carrying large amounts of money and following them before carrying out attacks.
The arrest followed an intelligence operation conducted by the IGP’s Special Team involving officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the CID Headquarters and the Police Intelligence Directorate.
The police statement said, “A search conducted in their rooms resulted in the recovery of GH¢1,600.00, assorted mobile phones, a Royal motorbike and a master key used to gain unauthorised access to victims’ vehicles and steal cash.”
The command said the suspects were arrested at different locations in Kumasi after information gathered during interrogation led investigators to another member of the alleged gang.
“The suspects subsequently led the police team to another hotel at Dechemso, a suburb of Kumasi, where Kingsley, alias KC, aged 35, also a Nigerian national, was arrested,” the statement said.
The police said another suspect, Chinedu, alias Alhaji, is currently on the run and appealed for information that could lead to his arrest.
The suspects allegedly admitted involvement in a GH¢15,000 robbery case involving a customer who withdrew money from Kwamang Rural Bank.
