A battle damage assessment has revealed that Nigerian Navy Marines and troops of the Nigerian Army’s 403 Amphibious Brigade killed 28 Boko Haram terrorists during a joint operation around Lake Chad, far higher than the eight initially reported.
The operation was carried out on October 28 under Operation HADIN KAI as part of ongoing intelligence-driven offensives against Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region.
The Nigerian Navy disclosed that the latest assessment showed the operation inflicted a heavier blow on the terrorists than earlier believed after troops completed a detailed review of the battlefield.
According to the Navy, the updated figure has increased the total number of Boko Haram terrorists neutralised by its Marines to 34.
The service said the operation was aimed at disrupting Boko Haram activities and preventing the insurgents from regrouping in the Lake Chad area.
It explained that the full impact of the offensive became clear only after the battle damage assessment, which revealed greater losses among the terrorists than the initial report indicated.
The Navy said its Marines worked alongside troops of the Nigerian Army’s 403 Amphibious Brigade throughout the operation.
It added that the joint force would continue intelligence-driven operations to sustain pressure on Boko Haram fighters and deny them freedom of movement around Lake Chad.
The Navy disclosed the outcome of the operation in a statement and a subsequent operational update issued after the battle damage assessment.
