The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says Nigeria’s National Register of Voters has risen to more than 103 million ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), announced this on Monday during a strategic workshop with media executives in Abuja.

The workshop focused on strengthening cooperation among INEC, editors and civil society to promote credible elections.

Amupitan said the Commission’s three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise recorded more than 10.6 million new applicants.

He added that the public display of the preliminary voters’ register and the final biometric cleanup had been completed.

The INEC chairman also announced that nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will begin on Friday, October 9, 2026.

He said INEC is improving the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to enhance transparency.

Amupitan stressed that public trust remains the foundation of credible and acceptable elections.

He urged editors and civil society organisations to work closely with INEC to tackle misinformation before and during the elections.

The chairman also asked media organisations to establish digital fact-checking desks for election reporting.

He promised that INEC would provide editors with direct access to verify election-related information and operational updates.

Earlier, Nigerian Guild of Editors President, Mr. Eze Anaba, urged journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness and balance to strengthen public confidence in the 2027 electoral process.
