President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to legendary juju musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, describing him as a national icon whose music has elevated Nigeria’s cultural heritage across the world.
In a statement marking the milestone, Tinubu said the veteran entertainer’s remarkable career has inspired generations of musicians and proved that Nigerian culture can earn global recognition through talent, hard work and commitment.
The President said King Sunny Ade has remained one of Africa’s finest cultural ambassadors, noting that his music continues to unite people and promote Nigeria’s rich traditions beyond its borders.
“Today, I warmly celebrate Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, the legendary King Sunny Ade and an icon of Nigerian and African music, on his 80th birthday.”
He continued: “For eight decades, you have exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship, enriching our nation and bringing joy to millions across generations. Through your extraordinary talent, creativity, discipline and enduring passion, you transformed juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.”
According to the President, King Sunny Ade’s unique musical style has earned him international respect and a permanent place among Africa’s greatest entertainers.
“As one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainers, you have brought the richness of our culture to audiences worldwide. Your distinctive sound, masterful blend of guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments, mesmerising dance steps, and innovative approach to music have earned you a distinguished place in the history of African arts and entertainment.”
Tinubu also praised the music icon for consistently flying Nigeria’s flag with pride throughout his decades-long career.
“Beyond your musical accomplishments, you have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria, demonstrating through your career that our cultural heritage can transcend borders and speak powerfully to people everywhere.”
King Sunny Ade is widely recognised as one of the pioneers who introduced Nigerian indigenous music to international audiences. His innovative fusion of traditional Yoruba rhythms with modern instruments helped popularise juju music globally, while his influence continues to shape contemporary African music. Over the years, he has received numerous local and international honours for his outstanding contributions to the creative industry.
Tinubu said the musician’s success has strengthened Nigeria’s cultural identity and inspired young talents to embrace their heritage.
“Your remarkable contributions to the Nigerian creative industry have inspired generations of musicians and practitioners.
