The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asked the Federal Government to publish the full details of the Nigeria-United States minerals framework involving Nigeria’s estimated $700 billion mineral resources.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday via his X handle
He said the $700 billion figure is the estimated value of Nigeria’s mineral deposits and not an American investment in the country.
Ibe questioned what Nigeria had committed to under the agreement and whether American companies would enjoy any special access to the country’s minerals.
He also asked if the deal guarantees local jobs, technology transfer, value addition and processing of minerals in Nigeria.
Ibe said the National Assembly should scrutinise any aspects of the agreement that involve strategic national resources, public spending or fiscal concessions.
He urged the government to publish any annexes or side letters and disclose whether the full agreement has been sent to lawmakers.
He concluded by saying, “Mr President, publish the deal. Let the National Assembly scrutinise what falls within its constitutional powers. Let Nigerians read the agreement and judge for themselves.”
