The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has warned airlines to reduce flight delays by matching their schedules with available aircraft and crew while improving passenger welfare.
The Director General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, gave the warning during separate meetings with Air Peace and Max Air at the NCAA headquarters in Abuja.
He said although weather, airport restrictions and other operational issues can affect flights, airlines must have effective contingency plans and keep passengers properly informed.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, also reminded airlines to provide refreshments, meals, accommodation, refunds and compensation for affected passengers in line with aviation regulations.
Air Peace said it currently has 15 serviceable aircraft and operates between 80 and 85 daily flights, blaming disruptions on technical faults, bird strikes, weather and airport restrictions.
The airline added that it provides hotel accommodation and other support for passengers affected by major disruptions.
Max Air disclosed that it is operating only two of its three available domestic aircraft because of crew shortages and has adjusted its flight schedule to match available resources.
Najomo assured airlines of NCAA’s support in addressing pilot shortages but insisted on realistic scheduling, strict regulatory compliance and better passenger care at all times.
