Imo State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyi Chukwu Joseph, after a 17-year-old girl allegedly fell from a two-storey building during an incident in Owerri that police say followed her rejection of his alleged sexual advance.
The victim, Chiamaka Chukwuokore, sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The incident occurred on November 1, 2026, at Mbonu Ejike Street in the Ikeneagbu area of Owerri.
According to the police, preliminary investigation showed that the suspect allegedly made a sexual advance towards the teenager, who is said to be his girlfriend’s younger sister. The girl reportedly rejected the advance, leading to an altercation before she allegedly fell from the two-storey building.
Police operatives who responded to the incident arrested the suspect and prevented an angry mob from attacking him.
The command said the suspect is currently in custody while detectives continue their investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine appropriate legal action.
Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, assured residents that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and that justice would be served in accordance with the law.
He also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the police to conclude their investigation, warning against taking the law into their own hands.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of Owerri and renewed calls for greater protection of young girls from all forms of abuse and violence.
