Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called for an urgent investigation into the Federal Ministry of Power after the Auditor-General of the Federation reportedly flagged over ₦95.4 billion spent by the ministry in 2022 without supporting documents or official records.
The demand was contained in the latest edition of SERAP’s “Auditor-General Watch” series, where the organisation drew attention to audit findings questioning the expenditure of ₦95,415,183,701.83.
According to SERAP, public funds must be managed in line with established financial regulations, stressing that all government expenditure should be properly documented and subject to independent verification.
The organisation urged the appropriate authorities to investigate the expenditure and determine how the funds were utilised.
It asked: “What was the money spent on?”
SERAP further queried: “Who authorised the expenditure?”
The organisation also demanded answers to the question: “Why were supporting documents unavailable?”
It equally called for investigators to establish “Were the goods, works or services actually delivered?”
SERAP maintained that if any part of the expenditure is found to have been improperly made or cannot be accounted for, the funds should be recovered and those responsible held accountable in accordance with the law.
Emphasising the importance of transparency in the management of public resources, the organisation declared: “₦95.4 billion cannot simply disappear from the public audit trail.”
SERAP added that it would continue to publish additional findings from the Auditor-General of the Federation’s report as part of its ongoing public accountability campaign.
