Ten passengers were injured on Wednesday after a chain-reaction crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, while emergency officials also prevented a possible train accident at Ilupeju Bypass by removing a broken-down commercial bus from a railway track.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the road accident occurred when a commercial bus pulled over on the bridge to repair a damaged tyre. Another commercial bus, reportedly unaware that the vehicle had stopped, crashed into it. A trailer then rammed into the second bus before fleeing the scene.

The impact left 10 passengers with various injuries as other road users watched in shock. The incident also caused temporary traffic disruption on the busy bridge.

According to the agency, emergency responders arrived promptly, treated the injured victims at the scene and transported them to a nearby hospital for further medical attention. The damaged vehicles were later removed, and the affected section of the bridge was reopened to motorists.

In another incident, LASEMA said its response team averted a potential railway disaster at Ilupeju Bypass after a commercial bus suffered a mechanical fault and became stranded on a rail line.

The agency said emergency workers used a light tow truck to remove the vehicle from the track before the arrival of a train, preventing what could have resulted in a serious accident.

LASEMA urged motorists to service their vehicles regularly and avoid carrying out repairs on highways, bridges and other busy roads, warning that such actions expose road users to unnecessary danger.

The agency also encouraged residents to quickly report emergencies through its toll-free numbers, 767 and 112, noting that prompt information helps emergency responders save lives and minimise damage.
