FRSC Mobile Court Jails Motorist, Suspends Licence for Assaulting Marshal In Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured the conviction of a motorist, Moses Omokaiye Peter, for violating traffic laws, including dangerous driving, using a phone while driving, assaulting a Marshal on duty and attempting to evade arrest in Abuja.

Peter was arraigned before His Worship Abubakar Jega, Magistrate of the FRSC Mobile Court sitting at the FCT Sector Command, Abuja, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following his arrest during a traffic enforcement operation.

The court sentenced him to five days of community service, a fine of N300,000 and suspension of his driver’s licence for three months.

The punishment was handed down in line with Regulation 65 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), 2012, which empowers the court to impose sanctions for serious traffic offences.

The case followed an incident recorded at about 11am on the same day during a Mobile Court operation at the FCT Sector Command.

According to the FRSC, the motorist allegedly attempted to escape arrest by driving away with the arresting Marshal, an action that led to the charge of assaulting a Marshal while performing official duties.

Reacting to the judgement, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, said enforcement officers carrying out their lawful responsibilities must be respected.

He warned that attempts to obstruct traffic officials, evade arrest or assault Marshals would continue to attract legal consequences.

“The enforcement personnel performing their lawful duties must be treated with respect and that attempts to evade arrest, obstruct enforcement or assault a Marshal will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the Corps Marshal said.

The FRSC also advised motorists to avoid dangerous driving habits, especially the use of mobile phones while driving, noting that such actions endanger the lives of drivers, passengers and other road users.

The conviction comes as the Corps continues its efforts to improve road safety compliance across the country through enforcement, public awareness and legal action against motorists who violate traffic regulations.

The FRSC urged road users to obey traffic rules, cooperate with enforcement officers and adopt responsible driving practices to reduce crashes and protect lives on Nigerian roads.
