Lionel Messi reached another remarkable milestone on Wednesday night, scoring his 100th goal for Inter Miami as the Major League Soccer side defeated Mexican club Cruz Azul 2-0 to win the Campeones Cup.
The Argentine captain opened the scoring in the first half before Casemiro sealed the victory late in the game, helping Inter Miami lift the trophy for the first time under new head coach Cristian “Kily” González.
Messi’s latest achievement also saw him extend his record as the most decorated footballer in history, taking his career trophy tally to 49.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner gave Miami the lead in the 24th minute when he met a cross from Luis Suárez with a powerful header that beat Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier.
The strike was Messi’s 100th goal in just 115 appearances for Inter Miami and came against the same Mexican side he scored against on his debut for the club in 2023.
Cruz Azul remained in contention for much of the match, but their hopes of a comeback ended in the 81st minute when Casemiro headed home from one of Messi’s corner kicks to make it 2-0.
The victory secured Inter Miami’s first-ever Campeones Cup title and marked Messi’s fourth trophy since joining the club. His previous honours with the MLS side include the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and the 2025 MLS Cup.
According to reports after the final, Messi has now won 49 major trophies during his illustrious career. His collection includes numerous domestic and international titles with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as six major honours with Argentina, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles.
Casemiro also enjoyed a memorable night, playing a decisive role by scoring the second goal that confirmed Inter Miami’s historic triumph.
The victory gave new coach Cristian “Kily” González a dream start to life in charge, as Inter Miami celebrated another landmark night inspired by Messi’s record-breaking performance.
