2027 Presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria cannot achieve lasting peace unless insecurity, poverty, hunger and poor governance are tackled.
Obi made the statement on Tuesday in a message posted on his verified X account to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace.
He said peace is more than the absence of conflict, stressing that Nigerians must be able to live safely and with dignity.
According to him, true peace exists when farmers can work without fear, children can attend school safely, families can afford food, and young people can look to the future with hope.
Obi said responsible and people-centred leadership is the foundation of peace, urging governments to protect lives, fight corruption, improve education and healthcare, and create economic opportunities.
He warned that Nigeria would achieve little if leaders continued to address only the effects of insecurity while ignoring its root causes.
The former Anambra State governor added that corruption and injustice weaken peace, insisting that Nigeria has the resources to become peaceful and prosperous with accountable leadership.
He urged leaders and citizens to use the International Day of Peace as an opportunity to build a nation where justice is upheld, lives are protected, opportunities are expanded, and every Nigerian can live with dignity and hope.
