The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has criticised Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, over his claim that he won the last presidential election without evidence.
The council said Obi’s recent remarks during a BBC interview were disappointing and did not reflect the facts established by the election outcome and court judgments.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Dele Alake, the APC said Obi’s claim showed a disregard for evidence and official records.
Quoting the former Anambra State governor, the statement said: “I don’t like going back to the past. I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election. Everything is not based on evidence.”
The APC argued that no candidate should make claims of victory without proof, describing Obi’s position as misleading and disconnected from reality.
It maintained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and the Supreme Court all affirmed the outcome.
The council also defended the Tinubu administration, saying the President has continued to implement reforms aimed at strengthening the economy, expanding infrastructure, improving healthcare and education, supporting businesses and creating jobs.
The APC further called on Obi to fulfil what it described as his earlier promise to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it was established that his administration left liabilities in Anambra State.
According to the statement, Anambra State’s financial records have confirmed the existence of those liabilities.
The 2023 presidential election remains a major issue in Nigeria’s political discourse, with the APC and the Labour Party continuing to disagree over the outcome despite the Supreme Court’s affirmation of President Tinubu’s victory.
