Edo Queens have been crowned champions of the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League after a thrilling comeback victory over Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the final played on Saturday night in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian champions fought back twice during regulation time before defeating their Ghanaian opponents 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2, securing both the regional title and qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
Ampem Darkoa got off to a dream start when Beline Nyarkoh found the back of the net just two minutes into the encounter to hand the Ghanaian side an early advantage.
Edo Queens responded almost instantly as Doosuur Anastasia Atume restored parity two minutes later, ensuring both teams went into the break with the score tied at 1-1 after an evenly contested first half.
The Ghanaian champions regained the lead in the 74th minute when Nyarkoh completed her brace, putting Ampem Darkoa within touching distance of lifting the trophy.
However, Edo Queens refused to surrender and mounted relentless pressure in the closing stages before Oluebube Umejiaku struck deep into stoppage time to make it 2-2 and send the final into a penalty shootout.
The Nigerian side displayed remarkable composure from the spot, converting four of their penalties while limiting Ampem Darkoa to just one successful kick to seal a deserved 4-1 shootout victory.
The triumph marks another significant achievement for Edo Queens, who now advance to the CAF Women’s Champions League finals as WAFU-B champions, strengthening Nigeria’s quest for continental glory.
