Political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has said his support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election is strictly for the presidency, insisting he would withdraw his backing if the former Anambra State governor agrees to run as a vice-presidential candidate.
Utomi stated this in a post on Friday, saying he considered it necessary to restate his position as political discussions over the 2027 election continue.
“I have said this before, and I believe it is important to remind Nigerians of my position as we approach 2027,” he wrote.
“Peter Obi has my support for the presidency.”
He, however, made it clear that he would not endorse Obi for any vice-presidential position.
“But my position is clear, I am not supporting the idea of Peter Obi becoming somebody else’s Vice President.”
Utomi added: “The day Peter Obi accepts a Vice Presidential position, I will walk away from his corner. I have said this plainly, and I stand by it.”
He explained that his position was driven by his belief in the kind of leadership Nigeria needs rather than loyalty to any individual.
“My concern is not about personalities. It is about the kind of leadership Nigeria needs and the direction in which we want our country to go,” he said.
Beyond the issue of Obi’s political future, Utomi called for reforms in Nigeria’s leadership recruitment process, arguing that the country should debate an age limit for executive offices.
“I have also argued that we should begin to rethink the age of those seeking executive office. The Nigerian presidency should not become a retirement home for politicians.”
He proposed that Nigerians should consider restricting presidential and governorship candidates to those who are 70 years old or younger.
“I believe there should be a serious national conversation about limiting presidential and gubernatorial candidates to those aged 70 or below.”
According to him, Nigeria must prioritise leaders with the energy and vision to address future challenges.
“Nigeria needs leadership that is focused on the future, not simply another cycle of political succession.”
He concluded by saying his views have remained consistent and should be judged on their merit.
“These are principles I have stated publicly, and Nigerians should judge them for themselves.”
