There is a silent epidemic ravaging the South East of Nigeria. It does not make the front pages of our Newspapers, yet it fills our Hospital Wards, empties our Homes, and breaks the hearts of countless Families. It is the alarming and sustained rise of Kidney and Liver Failures among our Youth and productive population, aged 16 to 50 years.
This is no longer a series of isolated Medical Cases. Hospital Data, Community Reports and agonizing testimonies from Families confirm that avoidable deaths, crippling Medical Bills, and the loss of our most productive manpower have become frighteningly commonplace. Beyond its medical implications, this crisis poses a direct and existential threat to the Social Cohesion, Economic Future, and Demographic Survival of Ndigbo.
As an Organization founded on the mandate to protect the Welfare, Dignity and Future of Ndigbo, the *IGBO PUBLIC AFFAIRS FOUNDATION [IPAF]* cannot afford to be silent. We have therefore adopted this challenge as our *Flagship Programme for the next Ten Years: 2026 – 2036.*
We call it: *“NDU NDIGBO DI MKPA” – The Igbo Lives Matter Health Initiative.*
Our decision is premised on two sacred Igbo maxims: _”Ndu bu isi. O nweghi ihe di ka ndu”_ – Life is supreme; and _”Ndu ka Aku”_ – Life is greater than wealth.
*Preliminary Findings: A Lifestyle Emergency*
Our preliminary investigations reveal a scary pattern. While infectious causes like Viral Hepatitis remain relevant, the remote and immediate drivers of this menace are largely lifestyle-induced. They include:
1. Unregulated consumption of herbal concoctions and abuse of over-the-counter painkillers;
2. Widespread substance abuse and deep alcoholism among youths;
3. Poor dietary and water intake habits, environmental toxins, and late presentation to health facilities due to low awareness.
This makes the tragedy even more painful because it is largely preventable.
IPAF Response: The Renal & Hepatic Rescue Initiative (IRHRI)
To confront this, IPAF has launched the *IPAF Renal & Hepatic Rescue Initiative (IRHRI)* – a whole-of-society, evidence-based intervention built on three simultaneous pillars:
1. SENSITIZE: To change behaviour through massive public education on prevention and early warning signs under our campaign _”Know Your Organs, Save Your Life”._
2. SCREEN & DIAGNOSE: To deploy free medical outreaches to detect at-risk individuals early, before organ failure sets in.
3. SUPPORT & RESEARCH: To provide treatment support for indigent patients while commissioning scientific research to unearth the remote and immediate causative agents peculiar to our environment.
Our goal is clear and measurable: *To reduce the incidence, morbidity and mortality from kidney and liver diseases in Igboland by 50% within 10 years* through Prevention, Early Detection, Treatment Support, Research, and Policy Advocacy.
Our target geography is the five South East States – Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo – with strategic extension to Anioma (Delta) and Rivers State and the Igbo Diaspora.
How We Will Deliver
To guarantee professionalism, transparency and scale, this intervention will be driven by:
1. An IPAF Health Steering Committee comprising renowned Nephrologists, Hepatologists, Public Health experts and community leaders.
2. A dedicated, audited *IPAF Kidney & Liver Support Fund for screening, treatment and research.
3. Formal Technical Partnerships with Federal Teaching Hospitals, State Ministries of Health, and International Specialist Practitioners.
4. Functional IPAF State Chapters & Health Desks* for coordination and community entry.
5. A robust Media and Diaspora Arm for advocacy and resource mobilization.
Our 10-year roadmap is phased: Phase 1 (Years 1-2) will focus on baseline epidemiological studies and launch; Phase 2 (Years 3-6) on scale-up to all 95 LGAs in the South East and treatment support for over 1,000 indigent patients; and Phase 3 (Years 7-10) on consolidation, policy advocacy and the establishment of Model Dialysis and Liver Care Support Centres through Public-Private Partnerships.
By 2036, we expect to have reached 5 million Ndi Igbo with prevention messaging, screened 250,000 persons, provided direct support to 2,000 indigent patients, and produced the first comprehensive data on kidney and liver disease in Igboland to inform National Policy.
This Is A Rescue Mission For A Generation
This is more than a health project. This is a rescue mission for a generation.
We therefore call on all stakeholders – *State Governments in the South East, the Federal Government, Corporate Nigeria, Traditional and Religious Institutions, Town Unions, the Igbo Diaspora, Philanthropists and well-meaning Nigerians* – to partner with IPAF on this Historic Mission.
The lives being lost are not statistics. They are our Sons, our Daughters, our Brothers, our Sisters and our Future. We must put this menace on the front burner of public discourse and put measurable pressure for achievable results.
The time to act is now.
_”Anyi ga-echebe ndu Ndi Igbo”_ – We will protect the lives of Ndi Igbo.
