Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes as Portugal defeated Norway 2-1 in their UEFA Nations League clash on Sunday, marking his first competitive match as an unused substitute since Euro 2008.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said he had planned to introduce the 41-year-old captain during the final 30 minutes but changed his mind because of how the match developed. He explained that the team’s performance did not create the right moment to bring Ronaldo into the game.
“I was thinking of bringing him on, maybe for the last half-hour, but then the game dictates other things. I felt it wasn’t the moment to bring him on,” Jesus said after the victory.
The coach noted that striker Gonçalo Ramos influenced the decision after scoring Portugal’s winning goal and having another effort ruled out for offside. Jesus said he did not want to disrupt the attack and instead focused on maintaining the team’s balance to protect the lead.
Jesus also dismissed any concerns about Ronaldo’s fitness. He explained that the veteran forward had started Portugal’s opening Nations League match against Wales and that the coaching staff wanted to carefully manage his playing time during the international break.
Portugal took the lead through João Félix in the 17th minute before Erling Haaland equalised for Norway early in the second half. Ramos restored Portugal’s advantage three minutes later by capitalising on a goalkeeping error to seal the visitors’ second straight win.
The victory moved Portugal to the top of Group A4 with six points from two matches, while Norway remained on three points. Although Ronaldo did not feature, Jesus insisted the decision was purely tactical and based on the flow of the game rather than any issue with the captain’s readiness.
