The All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified its criticism of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his ambition to become Nigeria’s vice president in 2027, questioning his readiness for the nation’s second-highest political office.

The party said Amaechi’s recent comments about his financial struggles and his late mother’s medical expenses raised concerns about his ability to provide the leadership expected of a vice president.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described Amaechi as a politician with a long history of public service, having served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant.

The party also expressed condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, while praying for her soul to rest in peace.

APC, however, questioned Amaechi’s recent public comments, accusing him of depending heavily on government positions for survival.

Morka said Amaechi had spent decades in influential public offices but appeared unable to sustain himself after leaving government.

The party stated: “For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family. Just three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones.”

The ruling party further argued that Amaechi’s ambition to become vice president under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2027 was misplaced.

“The presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” the statement added.

The APC also said Amaechi’s own public comments had become a major issue in assessing his suitability for the vice presidency.

“No one can speak more to Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of Vice President than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” Morka stated.

Amaechi, who served as transportation minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the ADC ahead of the 2027 general election.

The latest exchange adds to the growing political contest among major parties as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.

The APC’s remarks have further widened the political debate around leadership, public service and the expectations placed on individuals seeking top government positions in Nigeria.
